Installing the Read Later bookmark on iPhone and iPod touch

I apologize for the awkwardness of this step. I haven't yet found a way to skip any of this in Mobile Safari, even with the capabilities given to App developers.

To avoid this and install the Read Later bookmark much more quickly and easily, simply install the bookmark in Firefox or Safari on your computer, then synchronize your bookmarks to your iPhone or iPod touch with iTunes.

Step 1: Bookmark this page

Tap the Add Bookmark button (the "+" icon) in Mobile Safari's bottom toolbar, then tap Add Bookmark.

On the "Add Bookmark" screen, tap Save.

Step 2: Edit the bookmark

Tap the Bookmarks button (the book icon) in the bottom toolbar, then tap Edit.

Tap the Instapaper: Read Later bookmark that you just created.

Tap the address field (beginning with "http://www.instapaper.com/i__?").

Slide your finger to the left so the field scrolls all the way to the beginning. (You'll scroll past a lot of gibberish. Again, I apologize. I can't believe I'm asking users to do this.)

Position the cursor to be between "__?" and "javascript":

Delete everything before "javascript", then tap return. It should look like this:

If so, you're done! Tap Bookmarks, then Done, then Done again to return to this page.

Step 3: Test the bookmark

Tap the Bookmarks icon (the book icon), then tap the new "Instapaper: Read Later" bookmark. You should see a confirmation box telling you that the bookmark is correctly installed.

Now, whenever you're on a page you'd like to read later, simply bring up the Bookmarks menu and tap the "Instapaper: Read Later" bookmark. You'll get a separate tab that opens briefly to say "Saved!", then it will close itself and return you to the page.
